It is based on three premises: 1. The language of narrators and characters is relevant both for their characterization and for the construction of the context in which the action takes place; 2. there is no unique way to translate dialect; and 3. the different ways of doing it depend on the circumstances in which the translation is generated. The translation of marked language in “The Artful Touch,” a flash-fiction story by Charles Dickens, is addressed from three different approaches: neutralization, homologation and (social) compensation. The resulting translations may be deemed appropriate depending on the situation. En este artículo se aborda la traducción del lenguaje marcado en los textos literarios, a partir de tres premisas: 1. el lenguaje de narradores y personajes es signicativo tanto para su caracterización como para la construcción del contexto en que transcurre la acción; 2. no hay una única manera de traducir el lenguaje marcado; 3. las diferentes formas de hacerlo responden a las circunstancias en que se produce la traducción. Se desarrollan tres enfoques —neutralización, homologación y compensación (social)— mediante las cuales se aborda la traducción del lenguaje marcado en el microrrelato «The Artful Touch», de Charles Dickens. Sendas traducciones resultan adecuadas según la situación.
