The choice of participants was made by convenience; they are 15 years old on average, regardless of gender or age, and belong to freshman high school level. The focus of this research is qualitative, since it seeks to recognize the significance of social facts in their context to rebuild them. This approach, along with the constant comparative method, ethnographic study, techniques for collecting and analyzing data (such as open interview, observation and triangulation, and under the aegis of the descriptive paradigm), resulted in students improving their self-learning skills, as they collected information, studied, organized and presented results, given that the PBL allowed to reflect on their successes and failures and improved their learning as they learned and inquired more on the topic of photosynthesis. El presente artículo tiene como objetivo: “analizar los elementos del proceso de aprendizaje que emergen del alumnado de primer año medio del Liceo Alonso de Ercilla y Zúñiga, al aprender, mediante la metodología de aprendizaje basada en problemas (ABP), en temas relacionados con la educación ambiental, específicamente en la unidad de fotosíntesis”. La elección de sus participantes, se hizo por conveniencia, cuentan con una edad de 15 años en promedio, con independencia de género, y pertenecen al nivel de primero medio. En cuanto al enfoque de esta investigación es cualitativo, puesto que busca reconocer el significado de los hechos sociales en su contexto para reconstruirlos. Este enfoque, junto al método comparativo constante, el estudio etnográfico, las técnicas de recolección y análisis de datos como la observación, entrevista abierta y la triangulación, y bajo el alero del paradigma descriptivo obtuvo como resultado que el estudiantado mejora sus habilidades de auto-aprendizaje, cada vez que recolecta información, estudia, organiza y presenta resultados, dado que el ABP, le permite reflexionar sobre sus aciertos y errores y mejorar sus aprendizajes a medida que conoce e indaga más sobre el tema de fotosíntesis.
