Against the continuous assertion of the incapability of represent events, I present the next question: Where does originate the idea about the unimaginable, irrepresentable, unspeakable character of the genocide processes of 20th century? To answer this question I expound, in the first part, the iconic character of the missing persons portraits, in order to understand the frame in which can be established the assertion about the irrepresentable. Frente a la continua afirmación de la irrepresentabilidad de los acontecimientos, me planteo la siguiente pregunta: ¿De dónde procede la afirmación del carácter inimagi- nable, irrepresentable, indecible de los procesos de genocidio del siglo XX? Para contestar a esta pregunta me refiero en una primera parte al carácter icónico de los retratos de os desparecidos, para luego entender cuál es el marco sobre el cual se instala la afirmación acerca de lo irrepresentable.
