The paper discusses the pros and cons of the above typology and seeks to shed light on the theoretical and meth- odological connections in relation to student “profiles” and towards the achievement of the fundamental goals in higher education. Este artículo examina críticamente la literatura reciente sobre las mejores formas de aproxi- mación a la experiencia docente universitaria, particularmente aquella referida a una suerte de tipología tripartita respecto del estudiantado y del método de enseñanza/aprendizaje. Los tres tipos son: “aprendices en superficie” (surface learners), “aprendices estratégicos” (strategic learners) y “aprendices en profundidad” (deep learners). El ensayo discute los límites y peli- gros de dicha tipificación e intenta arrojar luz respecto de las posibles conexiones teóricas y metodológicas entre los perfiles estudiantiles y los procesos de enseñanza/aprendizaje; todo esto en función de la expectativa de mejoramiento de nuestra puesta en práctica del quehacer educativo universitario.
