For the research, 99 family properties were visited and semi-structured surveys were conducted, covering socioeconomic and animal welfare domains. Data was analyzed using statistical measures and T-Tests or Chi-square tests. Results showed that rural women play a crucial role in the care and management of equines in family agriculture in the region. However, they identified gaps in their socioeconomic profile and their knowledge and training in health and animal welfare issues. These barriers can affect the welfare of equines and the quality of life of women. Therefore, the importance of implementing measures and policies that promote a comprehensive approach to animal care and sustainable development in rural communities, considering the essential role of rural women and the Sustainable Development Goals, is highlighted. This would have a positive impact on both equines and the quality of life of people and the regional environment. El estudio examina el papel y perfil socioeconómico de la mujer en el cuidado del bienestar equino en la agricultura de subsistencia en Coclesito, Colón. Para la investigación, 99 propiedades familiares fueron visitadas y se llevaron a cabo encuestas semiestructuradas, cubriendo los dominios socioeconómicos y de bienestar animal. Los datos fueron analizados utilizando medidas estadísticas y pruebas T o Chi-cuadrado. Los resultados mostraron que las mujeres rurales tienen un papel crucial en el cuidado y manejo de los equinos en la agricultura familiar en la región. Sin embargo, identificaron brechas en su perfil socioeconómico, conocimiento y capacitación en temas de salud y bienestar animal. Estas barreras pueden afectar el bienestar de los equinos y la calidad de vida de las mujeres. Por lo tanto, se destaca la importancia de implementar medidas y políticas que promuevan un enfoque integral en el cuidado de los animales y el desarrollo sostenible en las comunidades rurales, considerando el papel esencial de la mujer rural y los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible. Esto tendría un impacto positivo tanto en los equinos como en la calidad de vida de las personas y el medio ambiente regional.
