| Sumario: | El objetivo de este artículo es realizar una reconstrucción de la comarca de Punta Arenas, apoyada en tres aspectos: la caracterización que de la comarca hacen los viajeros; el panorama de la población, basado en variables demográficas; y el desarrollo comercial, por medio de los productos importados y exportados. Según los relatos, las condiciones de la comarca en sus inicios fueron muy duras, contaba con una población bastante joven, que desafiaba la esperanza de vida de casi 40 años, con tasas de mortalidad y natalidad con una dinámica muy similar a la que se presentó para el total del país años después, pero con tasas de nupcialidad totalmente atípicas a dicho comportamiento. El comercio por el puerto era una de sus principales actividades económicas, por aquí se exportaban e importaban los productos que iban y venían de países como Inglaterra, Francia, España, Estados Unidos y otros de Latinoamérica. The objective of this article is to make a reconstruction of the region of Punta Arenas, resting on three aspects: the characterization of the region makethe passengers; the picture of the population, based on demographic variables; and the commercial development, by means of products imported and exported. According to the stories, the conditions of the region in their early days were very hard and had a rather young population, which defied the life expectancy of almost 40 years, with mortality and birth rate with a dynamic very similar to the one presented for the total of the country years after, but with marriage rates totally atypical to such behavior. Trade through the port was one of the main economic activities, for here were exported and imported products that came and went from countries such as England, France, Spain, the United States and others in Latin America.
