López González, Rocío Alarcón Montiel, Esmeralda redes sociales digitales jóvenes estudiantes de universidad género tecnologías de información y comunicación digital social networks young university students gender information and communication technologies In this article, the progress of an on-going exploratory-descriptive research is presented. It has the purpose to identify and analyze the use given to social media by young university students. The following are the results obtained from the implementation of a questionnaire to 594 bachelor students from the Universidad Veracruzana, Campus Xalapa. The progress shows, first, some coincidences with previous studies about the topic conducted in the past years, for example, the growing popularity of social media as means of communication and interaction amongst students. It is noticed that, in spite of coming from different social contexts, students share certain interests, attitudes and types of networks used, regardless of the bachelor they are enrolled to. Likewise, it is evidenced how social media are gaining ground as essential tools to support the performance of their academic activities. Additionally, the data shows that the behavior between women and men is similar. Nonetheless, slight differences were identified related to the use given to social media and the topics preferred by female and male university students. This study is considered to provide different analysis elements, setting a marker for the moment in which we are, to keep researching about the use given to by female and male students to social media in both academic and social environments. En este artículo se presentan los avances de una investigación en proceso, de carácter exploratorio-descriptivo, que tiene como propósito identificar y analizar el uso que hacen de las redes sociales digitales los grupos universitarios de jóvenes, se muestran los resultados obtenidos en la aplicación de un cuestionario a 594 estudiantes de distintas carreras de la Universidad Veracruzana, Región Xalapa. Estos avances muestran, en primer lugar, ciertas coincidencias con estudios previos sobre esta temática en los últimos años, por ejemplo, la creciente popularidad de las redes sociales digitales como medios de comunicación e interacción entre estudiantes. Se observa que, a pesar de tratarse de jóvenes provenientes de contextos sociales diversos, comparten ciertas temáticas de interés, actitudes y tipo de redes utilizadas, independientemente de la carrera de adscripción; asimismo se evidencia cómo las redes van ganando presencia como herramientas fundamentales de apoyo para la realización de sus actividades escolares. De igual forma, los datos dan cuenta de que hay un comportamiento similar entre mujeres y hombres; sin embargo, se identifican ligeras diferencias en relación con el uso que hace de las redes y los temas que prefiere abordar el estudiantado universitario. Se considera que el siguiente estudio ofrece diversos elementos de análisis, y marca una pauta de dónde estamos, para seguir investigando respecto al uso que le da el estudiantado a las redes sociales, tanto en el ámbito educativo, como en el social.
