When religious education prioritizes content, there is a risk of promoting moralizing processes. From the perspective of interculturality, it is possible to rethink religious education: it is a question of the religious being not understood as a content or object of study, but as a benchmark and as a human experience that provides a basis for dialogue and coexistence. Este ensayo busca establecer la diferencia entre objeto de estudio y referente en el marco de la educación religiosa costarricense. Los procesos educativos centrados en objetos de estudio suelen generar posturas antropocénticas, universalizaciones cuestionables y prácticas educativas adoctrinantes. Cuando la educación religiosa prioriza los contenidos, se corre el riesgo de promover procesos moralizantes. Desde la perspectiva de la interculturalidad, es posible repensar la educación religiosa: se trata de que lo religioso no sea comprendido como contenido u objeto de estudio sino como referente y como experiencia humana que fundamenta el diálogo y la convivencia.
