Mental health professions, such as counseling, psychology, and social work, in tandem with professionals working in academic scenarios, have an unavoidable social responsibility in caring for so many people and groups who have seen their lives cut short by violence. Both professional classes must work together in promoting new ways of thinking about violence and peace conducting to specific actions that eradicate the former and promote the latter. El aumento de episodios violentos en los escenarios más diversos y en las más variadas manifestaciones invita a ponderar si la violencia es un fenómeno permanente en la vida de personas y pueblos o si puede ser erradicada a través de acciones específicas. Las profesiones aliadas a la salud mental, entre las que están la consejería profesional, la psicología y el trabajo social, tienen una responsabilidad social irrenunciable en la atención a tantas personas y grupos que han visto truncadas sus vidas por la violencia. Así mismo, junto a las profesiones que trabajan en el campo de la educación, deben colaborar en la creación de nuevas maneras de pensar sobre la violencia y la paz que lleven a acciones concertadas con las que se pueda erradicar lo más completamente posible la primera y asentar sólidamente la segunda.
