The research was developed at the Archival Studies Section of the School of History at the Universidad of Costa Rica. The study was developed with students 18 to 28 years old. There were two phases, qualitative and quantitative. After analyzing the data collected, the research questions were answered. Results include a list of characteristics of expert apprentices at using ICTs and recommendations about how to encourage this skill. Experts apprentices in ICTs use a number of characteristics: autonomy and creativity to solve challenges related to the use of ICTs for self-learning, tendency to satisfy curiosity, willingness to seek solutions to the technological challenges associated with the everyday life, interest in developing a better performance than their peers in the use of technological tools, incorporating technology to personal life, critical attitude about information, and permanent interest in learning. Recibido 18 de diciembre de 2014 • Corregido 9 de julio de 2015 • Aceptado 31 de julio de 2015El objetivo general de esta investigación es describir los atributos que distinguen al grupo de estudiantes expertos en la competencia uso de las TIC, entre estudiantes de Archivística. La investigación siguió la estrategia de los métodos mixtos y su referente base es la teoría de principiantes y expertos. El trabajo se llevó a cabo en la Sección de Archivística de la Escuela de Historia de la Universidad de Costa Rica, con estudiantes cuya edad osciló entre los 18 y los 28 años. Tuvo una fase cualitativa y una fase cuantitativa. Después de analizar la información recolectada, se procedió a responder las preguntas de investigación. Entre los resultados destaca la caracterización de estudiantes expertos en uso de las TIC y una serie de recomendaciones sobre cómo se podría estimular el desarrollo de esta competencia. El grupo de aprendices expertos en uso de las TIC presentan una serie de características: autonomía y creatividad para resolver desafíos relacionados con el uso de las TIC, capacidad para el autoaprendizaje, tendencia a satisfacer la curiosidad, disposición a buscar soluciones para los desafíos tecnológicos asociados a la vida cotidiana, interés por desarrollar un desempeño mejor que el de sus pares en el uso de herramientas tecnológicas, incorporación de la tecnología a la vida personal, actitud crítica ante la información, interés por aprender constantemente.
