For this purpose, the results obtained from questionnaires completed by current elementary teachers are shared, in order to get firsthand knowledge of their professional training and experience, as well as their training and pedagogical needs in the literacy field. Among the main findings of the research, it is considered as critical that the teachers’ own training and professional development regarding the initial processes of reading and writing allow them to fully comprehend the theoretical background of the Elementary Level Spanish Program; otherwise, there is a risk of misinterpretations and incorrect practices that might jeopardize the Program´s approach. Recibido 16 de mayo de 2014 • Corregido 12 de enero de 2015 • Aceptado 27 de abril de 2015Este artículo aborda el tema de la formación y el desarrollo profesional de docentes en servicio en el campo de la lectoescritura, con el propósito de analizar las implicaciones de la puesta en marcha del nuevo programa de español para I Ciclo de la Educación General Básica en Costa Rica. Para ello se comparte la información obtenida mediante cuestionarios respondidos por docentes en servicio en el nivel de la educación básica, para conocer, desde sus propias voces, la formación y experiencia profesional, las prácticas pedagógicas y necesidades de formación en el campo de la lectoescritura. Entre los principales hallazgos encontrados en la investigación, se determina como indispensable que la formación y el desarrollo profesional docente en el tema de los procesos iniciales de lectura y escritura permitan a las educadoras y los educadores comprender a profundidad de los planteamientos teóricos que fundamentan el programa de español para el I Ciclo; de lo contrario, se corre el riesgo de interpretaciones y prácticas equivocadas que pueden dar al traste con su enfoque.
