This paper establishes the preceding historical background and explains the use of this concept, emphasizing its economic nature and its subsequent insertion in the education policy. La ambigüedad del concepto de calidad educativa ha puesto de manifesto la necesidad de estudiar el origen del mismo en un contexto mucho más amplio que el educativo. El presente trabajo establece ese marco referencial histórico que antecede y explica la utilización de este concepto, para enfatizar su naturaleza económica y su consecuente inserción en la política educativa.
