AMBIENTALES81062019-08-23T21:22:50Z Science and Geopolitics in the Origins of the Green Revolution Ciencia y geopolítica en los orígenes de la Revolución Verde Picado, Wilson Green Revolution wheat seeds Revolución verde semillas de trigo In this article, the influence of geopolitics is analyzed in the case of spreading seeds of high-yielding varieties in the Third World, through study cases in Mexico, India and Costa Rica. In Mexico, agricultural research, supported by the Rockefeller Foundation since 1943, allowed the development of high-yielding varieties of wheat. In India, the cradle of the so-called Green revolution, the arrival of these seeds happened within the frame of the expansion of communism in Southeast Asia, and the resulting interest of the United States in controlling social conflicts. In the case of Costa Rica, its strategic position in relation to the Panama Canal, in-volved a remarkable interest of the United States in the development of a program for food production that would prepare the land so that, years later, the seeds and the Green revolution technology would be accepted. Se analiza el peso de la geopolítica en la expansión de las semillas de alto rendimiento en el Tercer Mundo, a través del estudio de los casos de México, India y Costa Rica. En México, la investigación agrícola, apoyada a partir de 1943 por la Fundación Rockefeller, permitió el desarrollo de semillas de trigo altamente productivas. En India, cuna de la denominación Revolución Verde, la llegada de estas semillas ocurrió en el marco de la expansión del comunismo en el Sudeste Asiático y del consecuente interés de Estados Unidos por controlar la conflictividad social en los campos agrícolas. En Costa Rica, su posición estratégica en torno al Canal de Panamá, implicó un notable interés de EU en el desarrollo de un programa de producción de alimentos que prepararía el terreno para que, años después, se adoptaran las semillas y la tecnología de la Revolución Verde.
