Dry matter contents varied between 11.4 and 28.2% and ash content between 2.96 and 6.44%, ona dry basis. The proportion of water-soluble material was 53.7% and extracts showed a pH of 4.05 ± 0.42, for an acidity of3,48% expressed as lactic acid. The content of reducing sugars was 6.6 ± 1.3% for the leaf biomass, although much lowerin the root system. Cobalt, copper, nickel, zinc, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus and calcium were also determined.In total, nine plant pigments were isolated by extraction with acetone and characterized by visible spectrophotometry.Acid hydrolysis led to a maximum production of free amino acids at pH 3 and 20°C, while the generation of aldehydesunder those conditions was little significant; hence, no antagonistic effects are expected for the mycelial growth underthe extraction conditions. Preliminary microbiological assays showed a remarkable ability of the extracts to supportthe mycelial growth in vitro of shiitake mushroom. Se caracterizaron fisicoquímicamente los residuos de biomasa lignocelulósica de la producción piñera de la RegiónHuetar Norte y se evaluó su potencial como medio de cultivo para la etapa de crecimiento micelial del hongo shiitake(Lentinula edodes). La materia seca, según parte de la planta, varió entre 11,4 y 28,2 % y la ceniza, en base seca, entre2,96 y 6,44%. La proporción hidrosoluble fue de 53,7%; los extractos mostraron un pH de 4,05 ± 0,42 y una acidezde 3,48%, expresada como ácido láctico. El contenido de azúcares reductores fue de 6,6 ± 1,3 % en la biomasa foliar,aunque menor en el sistema radical. Asimismo, se determinó cobalto, cobre, níquel, zinc, magnesio, potasio, fósforoy calcio, nutrientes esenciales para el desarrollo fúngico y se aislaron nueve pigmentos vegetales por extracción conacetona, los cuales fueron caracterizados por espectrofotometría visible. La hidrólisis ácida condujo a una producciónmáxima de aminoácidos libres a pH 3 y 20° C, mientras que la generación de aldehídos fue poco significativa segúnestas condiciones, por lo que no se esperan efectos antagonistas al crecimiento micelial. Ensayos microbiológicos preliminaresdemostraron una notable capacidad de los extractos para soportar el crecimiento micelial in vitro del hongoshiitake.
