Ticks collected on a farro in Paquera, Guanacaste, were sent to the Wellcome Laboratories in England for being tested against organic phosphate compounds. The ticks appeared to be completely susceptible to these acaricides, as well as against carbaryl. The strain is now maintained in the laboratory in San Isidro de Coronado as the reference strain of B . microplusfor Costa Rica. The technique of the "Shaw test", in which larvae of the proper age are used for determining the susceptibility of ticks against acaricides, is now well established in our laboratory and we hope to start soon with a systematic investigation, of the efficiency of the acariddes used in Costa Rica against B. miáoplus. The problem of a possible ressistance of B. microplus in Costa Rica and the importance of a tick-resistance laboratory in case of a resistance outbreak have been discussed. Indispensable para la realización de pruebas de resistencia a acaricidas con Boophilus microplus es una cepa susceptible, cultivada continuamente en el laboratorio. Garrapatas colectadas en una finca en Paquera, Guanacaste, fueron enviadas al Laboratorio de Wellcome, Inglaterra, para ser probadas contra los organo-fosforados. Las ·garrapatas se mostraron completamente susceptibles hacia esos acaricidas, así como también hacia el carbaryl. Desde entonces, esta cepa fue establecida en el laboratorio en San Isidro de Coronado, como la cepa de r~ferencia de B. microplus para Costa Rica. La técnica de la "prueba de Shaw". en la que se utiliza larvas para determinar la susceptibilidad de las garrapatas contra los acaricidas, está ahora bien establecida en el laboratorio y se puede empezar de manera sistemática a investigar la eficiencia de los ixodicidas usados en Costa Rica. En este trabajo se discute el problema de una posible resistencia de B. microplus en Costa Rica, así como el papel que puede jugar en este caso un laboratorio de resistencia de garrapatas contra acaricidas.
