Günther, Jorge The growth rate and feed conversion of juveniles of the jaguar cichlid (Cichlasoma managuense) are compared at constant densities, in groups of 2, 5, 10 and 20 individuals per aquaria, and as isolated individuals. Density had a positive correlation with heterogeneous growth (coefficient of variation), with mortality and with mean and maximum growth rates. Feed conversion correlated negatively with density. Marked adaptation effects were observed during the first phases of the experiment. These effects were much stronger in individual fishes than in fish groups and appeared to be inversely correlated with density. After adaptation the growth rate of biggest fishes in the groups is still significantly greater than that of individual fishes. It is concluded that heterogeneous growth is not only due to growth depression of subordinate fishes but also to growth enhancement of dominant fishes. Se evaluaron el crecimiento y la conversión alimenticia de juveniles de guapote tigre (Cichlasoma managuense) mantenidos a densidades constantes de 1, 2, 5, 10 y 20 individuos por pecera. La densidad mostró una correlación positiva con el coeficiente de variación (crecimiento heterogéneo), con la mortalidad y con las tasas de crecimiento promedio y máxima. La conversión alimenticia presentó una correlación negativa con la densidad. Se observaron fuertes efectos de adaptación durante las primeras fases del experimento. Estos efectos fueron mucho más intensos en los peces aislados que en los peces en grupo y mostraron una relación inversa con la densidad. Después de la adaptación, la tasa de crecimiento de los peces más grandes de cada grupo fue significativamente mayor que la de los peces individuales. Se concluye que el crecimiento heterogéneo no se debe solamente a la reducción del crecimiento de los peces subordinados sino también a la estimulación del crecimiento de los peces dominantes.
