We identified strengths and weaknesses of the academic programs that train teachers of mathematics in the country, according to the teachers. The sample included educators trained in public and private universities, working at different educational regions of the country. The information was gathered through a questionnaire. Overall, educators perceive training in theoretical mathematics as the main strength. However, according to the scale used, all other aspects related to the formation process of a math teacher had a low perception. Within the mentioned weaknesses are: training in educational elements, evaluative, methodological, philosophical, psychological and historical, as well as the lack of adequate preparation in the use of technological resources in teaching. These opinions are a valuable input to the universities, because they show the opinions held by graduates of the training received. El objetivo fundamental del estudio era determinar la percepción de una muestra de 249 profesores de matemáticas de educación secundaria con respecto a la formación recibida en la universidad. Se identificaron fortalezas y debilidades de los programas académicos que forman el profesorado de matemáticas en Costa Rica, según el criterio de los docentes. La muestra incluyó educadores formados en universidades públicas y privadas, que laboran en diferentes regiones educativas de Costa Rica. La información fue recolectada por medio de la aplicación de un cuestionario. En términos generales, los educadores perciben su formación en matemáticas teóricas como la principal fortaleza. No obstante, de acuerdo con la escala empleada, todos los demás aspectos vinculados con el proceso formativo de un educador matemático presentaron una percepción baja. Dentro de la debilidades mencionan: la formación en elementos pedagógicos, evaluativos, metodológicos, filosóficos, sicológicos y de historia; así como la carencia de una adecuada preparación en el uso de recursos tecnológicos para la enseñanza. Las opiniones recabadas constituyen un valioso insumo para las universidades, debido a que muestran el criterio que tienen sus egresados sobre la formación recibida.
