It is important to explore the types of instruction provided in the training process of students that represent the country in Central American, Ibero-American and World Olympics, since the creation of comprehensively trained individuals should be promoted to provide scientifically competent people who can become agents of transformation in diverse environments. The investigation was carried out between May and November of 2018, working with 16 students, at least 1 student of each edition, and 8 tutors or professors specialized in various areas of biology. Interviews, case studies and observation were used to collect data. The main results indicated that the preparation processes for competing in the International Biology Olympics promoted scientific thinking skills, and that the use of arguments in a variety of student-tutor interactions, as well as the use of analogies, mainly by the students, served as a way to for students to better understand and internalize content. It is concluded that argumentation should be emphasized in the preparation of students as a way to better explain what they are learning; they always question the usefulness of what they learn in both personal and social terms. On the other hand, analogies are literary devices that enable better understanding of content by allowing students to relate what they are learning to what they already know. La presente investigación tiene como propósito identificar las competencias de pensamiento científico, como la argumentación y el uso de analogías, fomentadas en el estudiantado costarricense participante en las Olimpiadas Internacionales de Biología. Es importante explorar las acciones de mediación del aprendizaje, en el proceso de entrenamiento de este alumnado, para representar al país en las diversas justas, sean la centroamericana, iberoamericana o mundial, considerando que se deben promover individuos integralmente formados, donde se potencian sujetos científicamente competentes, con el fin de que sean agentes transformadores, capaces de dar respuestas a diversas situaciones de un entorno que desconocen. La indagación se llevó a cabo de mayo a noviembre, 2018, y se trabajó con 16 estudiantes, al menos 1 de cada edición y 8 individuos del personal de tutoría o docente en alguna especialidad de biología. Entre las técnicas de recolección de datos se aplicaron entrevistas, estudios de caso y observación en el ambiente educativo. Los principales resultados indicaron el proceso de preparación y competencia en dichas olimpiadas, en las cuales se identifica la promoción de las competencias de pensamiento científico, el uso de la argumentación en las variadas interacciones de estudiantes y personal tutor, así como el empleo de analogías, principalmente por parte del estudiantado, como una manera de ir comprendiendo e interiorizando el contenido. Se concluye que la argumentación es promovida en la preparación estudiantil, como una de las formas de dar respuestas a lo que están aprendiendo; siempre se cuestionan la funcionalidad de lo que los grupos estudiantiles adquieren tanto en el ámbito personal como en el social. Por otra parte, las analogías son figuras literarias que les facilitan poder comprender mejor el contenido, puesto que lo relacionan con lo que conocen.
