At the end, it presents an innovative experience of safeguarding local heritage, which can contribute as a model for cities with insufficient (or even non-existent) instruments to protect buildings of historical and cultural value. Baseando-se no mapeamento de dispositivos legais, atos normativos e Cartas Patrimoniais, o presente artigo discute a preservação do patrimônio edificado em cidades de médio porte brasileiras, considerando as especificidades de seus bens culturais, muitas vezes caracterizados por obras modestas que, todavia, adquiriram com o tempo importante significação cultural enquanto objetos potenciais da memória coletiva de seus moradores. Ao final, apresenta uma experiência inovadora de salvaguarda patrimonial local, que pode contribuir como modelo para cidades com insuficientes (ou mesmo inexistentes) instrumentos de proteção de edificações de valor histórico e cultural.
