De Gracia, Guillermina Itzel Justo Arosemena Darwin Spencer spencerismo evolucionismo frenología recepción del darwinismo evolución social Justo Arosemena Darwin Spencer Spencerism evolutionism phrenology reception of Darwinism social evolution The study by our historians of the interest and contributions of the Isthmians to Natural History and evolutionism during the nineteenth centuries has been non-existent; partly due to the lack of corresponding documentation and the low educational level of the population in that period. However, a more detailed study has shown that the nineteenth-century Isthmian man showed interest in these problems, at least at the popular level. This paper presents the attention that two Panamanian thinkers of that century, Justo Arosemena Quesada (1817-1896) and Manuel José Pérez (1820-1903), showed for modern evolutionary theories, especially those attributed to Charles R. Darwin (1809-1882) and Herbert Spencer (1820-1903). The role played by positivist philosophy and the metaphors of Darwinist revolution and Darwin industry in the correct interpretation of the role played by Isthmian intellectuals in the reception and study of evolutionism during the Panamanian Romantic period is carefully discussed. El estudio por parte de nuestros historiadores sobre el interés y contribuciones de los istmeños a la Historia Natural y al evolucionismo durante los siglos XIX ha sido nulo; en parte por la falta de documentación correspondiente y por el bajo nivel educativo de la población en aquel entonces. No obstante, un estudio más detallado ha demostrado que el hombre decimonónico istmeño mostró interés por estos problemas, cuando menos a nivel popular. En el presente escrito se presenta la atención que dos pensadores panameños de aquel siglo, Justo Arosemena Quesada (1817-1896) y Manuel José Pérez (1837-1895), mostraron por las modernas teorías evolutivas, en especial las atribuidas a Charles Robert Darwin (1809-1882) y Herbert Spencer (1820-1903). Se discute con cuidado el papel jugado por la filosofía positivista y las metáforas de revolución darwinista e industria Darwin en la correcta interpretación del rol desempeñado por los intelectuales istmeños en la recepción y estudio del evolucionismo durante el periodo romántico panameño.
