spelling SIWO111512020-07-02T15:24:54Z Reception of Qurʾān in the LGBTQ Muslim Community Recepción del Qurʾān en la Comunidad LGBTQ Musulmana al-Haqq Kugle, Scott Siraj Ceballos, Manuela The homophobic mass murder at the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, Florida, in 2016 makes it urgent for Muslims and their friends to critically reassess their understanding of Queer Muslims (that is, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Muslims). Muslims cannot pretend that Islam has nothing to do with the killing, since the murderer was motivated by his understanding of Islam. However, research reveals that Islam is not inherently condemning of LGBT people: it has been interpreted that way, but its scriptural sources are open to other interpretations. This article demonstrates the varied ways that Queer Muslims receive the Qur’an. Through interviews with members of this community of varied ethnicity, national origin, and doctrinal affiliation, one recurring insight arises: namely, that a religion that does not focus on the lived experience of real people, especially those who struggle against marginalization and injustice, is not a religion of compassion. Queer Muslims find certain principles essential as they interpret the Qur’an, such as realistic assessment of social life, affirmation of deep diversity in creation, protection of human dignity, adherence to justice, and insistence on care and compassion as the foundation of Islam. El asesinato homofóbico masivo en la discoteca Pulse en Orlando, Florida en el año 2016 demuestra lo urgente que es para los musulmanes y sus aliados una reexaminación crítica de su concepción de los musulmanes queer (es decir, personas musulmanas lesbianas, gais, bisexuales y transgénero). Los musulmanes no pueden fingir que el Islam no tiene nada que ver con la matanza, ya que el asesino habría sido motivado por su comprensión del Islam. Sin embargo, mi investigación demuestra que el Islam no condena inherentemente a las personas LGBT. Aunque haya sido interpretado de ese modo, sus fuentes escritas están abiertas a otras interpretaciones. Este artículo muestra las distintas maneras en las cuales los musulmanes queer reciben el Qurʾān. En entrevistas con miembros de esta comunidad (provenientes de distintos grupos étnicos, nacionales y doctrinarios) sobresale la siguiente reflexión: una religión que no se enfoca en las experiencias vitales de las personas, especialmente de aquellas quienes luchan en contra de la marginalización y la injusticia, no es una religión compasiva. Los musulmanes queer consideran ciertos principios esenciales para interpretar el Qurʾān, tales como una evaluación realista de la vida social, la afirmación de la diversidad profunda de la creación, la protección de la dignidad humana, la fidelidad a la justicia y la insistencia en el cuidado y la compasión como fundamentos del Islam.
