Unión Europea Centroamérica Relaciones Internacionales. The article aims to analyze present andfuture relationships between the EuropeanUnion and Latin America in the light of recentdevelopments and new political, social andeconomic perspectives in both regions. Fromthe First Summit in Rio de Janeiro (1999) tothe last one (Lima, 2008) the bi-regional strategicassociation has gone through differentphases. In the current international situation,the Latin America region exhibits differentrealities with the Andean Community inthe throes of a crisis while MERCOSURis incorporating a new Member State, Venezuela.All the States forming part of SICAhave signed the DR-CAFTA with UnitedStates and are negotiating a new associationagreement with the EU. Within thiscontext Chile and Mexico have consolidatedtheir positions as single actors. Onthe other hand, the EU is also in the middle of a complex process, involving both élargissement(the incorporation of new MemberStates) and approfondissement (the signingand the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty). Relationsbetween the two regions are thus facingnew social, economic and political challenges. El artículo trata de analizar las relacionespresentes y futuras entre la Unión Europea yAmérica Latina a luz de los desarrollos recientesy las nuevas perspectivas políticas, socialesy económicas en ambas regiones. Desdela Cumbre en Rio de Janeiro (1999) hasta laúltima (Lima, 2000), la asociación estratégicabirregional ha atravesado diferentes fases. Enactual situación, la región de Latinoaméricaexhibe diferentes realidades con la ComunidadAndina en medio de una crisis, con laincorporación de un nuevo Estado miembroen Mercosur, Venezuela. Mientras que todoslos Estados que forman parte del Sistema deInvestigación Centroamericana (SICA) hanfirmado el DR-CAFTA con Estados Unidos yestán negociando un nuevo acuerdo de asociacióncon la Unión Europea (UE).En ese contexto, Chile y México hanconsolidado sus posiciones como actores singulares. Por otro lado, la UE se encuentratambién en medio de un proceso complejo,incluyendo tanto la am- pliación (la incorporaciónde nuevos Estados Miembros) como la profundización(a firma y ratificación del Tratadode Lisboa). Las relaciones entre ambas regionesestán, en consecuencia, afrontando nuevos desafíossociales, económicos y políticos.
