It is considered the first pandemic that the modern world has faced that was able to ground all air services and contain all families in their homes. The high contagion capacity of the virus associated with its high lethality in people with risk factors placed the world economy in a close balance between economic aspects and public and individual health. The economic, material, and human losses increased the current social gaps. Then, a reflection of the main events that have occurred from 2019 to date and the impact caused by COVID-19 in the world is presented. The economic recession is considered as part of the results, besides the shipping-container crisis, and the implemented health measures and their effects. The article concludes with four lessons on epidemiological intelligence, resilience, the ability to learn to plan for the future, and the correct risk management. El SARS-CoV2 y su enfermedad conocida como COVID-19 registró más de 6 mil millones de contagios y cerca de 6 millones de fallecimientos desde su primer caso diagnosticado en Wuhan, China. Es considerada la primera pandemia, enfrentada por el mundo moderno, que fue capaz de poner todos los servicios aéreos en tierra y contener a todas las familias en sus hogares. Su alta capacidad de contagio, asociada a su elevada letalidad en personas con factores de riesgo, puso la economía mundial en una estrecha balanza entre los aspectos económicos y el ámbito de la salud: las pérdidas económicas, materiales y humanas aumentaron las brechas ya existentes. A partir de este análisis, se presenta un relato de los principales hechos acontecidos desde el 2019 a la fecha y el impacto ocasionado por la COVID-19 en el mundo; dentro de los resultados se visualiza la recesión económica, la crisis por los contenedores, las medidas sanitarias y sus efectos, y se proponen cuatro posibles lecciones aprendidas: sobre la inteligencia epidemiológica, la resiliencia, la capacidad de aprendera planificar a futuro y la correcta gestión del riesgo.
