This study explores the jegui dance as an important vehicle forcultural expression among the ngäbe people in the southern region of CostaRica. In a globalized context, where cultural identities are increasingly blurred, then ngäbe have managed to preserve their dances and traditions. Objective. The aim is to understand the ngäbe-buglé jegui dance as a pillar of their intangible heritage and its active role in shaping and safeguarding the identity of this ancestral community. Methodology. Documents related to ngäbe culture in Costa Rica and Panama are reviewed to validate the elements discussed; however, due to the scarcity of information, an interview is conducted with Wilfredo Montezuma,an indigenous leader in charge of the jegui dance group Kigaribu. A discussionis developed around the jegui dance, which is not only an element of intangible cultural heritage for the ngäbe community but also reinforces the country’s cultural diversity and highlights the roots of one of Costa Rica’s ancestral communities. Conclusions. The jegui dance is essential to the ngäbe people, as it reflects their capacity for adaptation over time in response to the social and environmental needs of the community. It also demonstrates a humanistic expression of identity and culture in every step. This article suggests the need for further research on the jeguidance, which could contribute to the recognition of an isolated community and the dissemination of traditions that are of interest to the Costa Rican population. Introducción. Se explora la danza jegui como un importante vehículo de expresión cultural para los ngäbe de la zona sur de Costa Rica. En un contexto globalizado, donde las identidades culturales son cada vez más difusas, los ngäbe han conseguido preservar sus danzas y tradición. Objetivo. El propósito es comprender la danza jegui ngäbe-buglé como un pilar de su patrimonio inmaterial y su rol activo en la configuración y salvaguarda de la identidad de este pueblo ancestral. Metodología. Se revisan documentos relacionados con la cultura ngäbe en Costa Rica y Panamá para validar los elementos mencionados; sin embargo, ante la escasez de información, se realiza una entrevista a Wilfredo Montezuma, indígena a cargo del grupo de danza jegui Kigaribu. Se desarrolla una discusión sobre la danza jegui, la cual no solo constituye un patrimonio cultural inmaterial, sino que también refuerza la diversidad cultural del país y permite reconocer las raíces de una de las comunidades ancestrales de Costa Rica. Conclusiones. La danza jegui es esencial para el pueblo ngäbe, porque evidencia su capacidad de adaptación, a lo largo del tiempo, en respuesta a las necesidades sociales y naturales y demuestra un humanismo que expresa identidad y cultura en cada uno de sus pasos. Este artículo sugiere la necesidad de llevar a cabo investigaciones adicionales sobre la danza jegui, las cuales podrían contribuir a la reivindicación de un pueblo que ha estado aislado y permitir la difusión de tradiciones que resultan de interés para los costarricenses. O propósito é compreender adança jegui ngäbe-buglé como um pilar do seu património imaterial e o seu papel ativo na configuração e salvaguarda da identidade deste povo ancestral. Metodologia. São analisados documentos sobre a cultura ngäbe na Costa Rica e no Panamá para validar os elementos mencionados; no entanto, face à escassez de informação, realiza-se uma entrevista a Wilfredo Montezuma, indígena responsável pelo grupo de dança jegui Kigaribu. Desenvolve-se uma discussão sobre a dança jegui, que não só constitui um património cultural imaterial para a comunidade ngäbe, como também reforça a diversidade cultural do país e permite reconhecer as raízes de uma das comunidades ancestrais da Costa Rica. Conclusões. A dança jegui é essencial para o povo ngäbe, pois evidencia a sua capacidade de adaptação ao longo do tempo em resposta às necessidades sociais e naturais da comunidade, demonstrando um humanismo que expressa identidade e cultura em cada um dos seus passos.
