Tensions, estrangement, and approximations between the two countries are shown. These relationships were conditioned by exacerbated anti-communism in the context of the Cold War and remained several years later. It is noted that, in all this time, the influence and interests of the United States were present in the relationships of these nations. Political (and personal) approaches that are not always recorded when talking about the links between these countries are taken into account. For this purpose, each government’s official statements and assertions regarding diplomatic ruptures and restorations in five decades are critically analyzed; it is also investigated in testimonial sources, videos and newspaper articles of some of the protagonists. They are two nations with different political regimes that, despite discordant situations, approaches, and collaborations prevailed over the sowing and cultivation of anti-communism El artículo aborda cómo han sido los vínculos políticos entre algunos gobiernos de Costa Rica y Cuba a partir del triunfo de la Revolución Cubana acontecido el 1 de enero de 1959. Se muestran las tensiones, distanciamientos y aproximaciones que hubo entre ambos países. Esas relaciones estuvieron condicionadas por el anticomunismo exacerbado en el contexto de la Guerra Fría que se mantuvo varios años después. Se observa que, en todo este tiempo, la influencia e intereses de los Estados Unidos estuvieron presentes en las relaciones de esas naciones. Se rescatan los acercamientos políticos (y personales) que no siempre se consignan cuando se habla de los nexos entre esos países. Para ese propósito, se analizan críticamente las declaraciones y afirmaciones oficiales de cada gobierno respecto a las rupturas y restablecimientos diplomáticos que tuvieron en cinco décadas; también se indaga en fuentes testimoniales, videos y artículos periodísticos de algunos de los protagonistas. Son dos naciones con regímenes políticos diferentes que, a pesar de vivir situaciones discordantes, los acercamientos y colaboraciones se impusieron sobre la siembra y cultivo del anticomunismo.
