In this article we reflect and discuss various aspectsof the present situation, from a Catholic theological perspective, seekingto identify what could be a sign of the times, and a historic opportunity forthe Catholic Church and Theology to deepen the renewal since the SecondVatican Ecumenical Council. Dentro de las aceleradas transformaciones en lo religioso que se vienenobservando en las sociedades occidentales durante las últimas décadas, enAmérica Latina se halla un interesante fenómeno en la Iglesia Católica, losllamados "católicos no-practicantes", un término de por sí ambiguo y discutible,pero cuyo fenómeno al que hace referencia tiene un impacto importanteen la Iglesia, por el decrecimiento en el número de fieles que se involucranactivamente en la vida religiosa. En el presente artículo se reflexiona y sediscute acerca de varios aspectos sobre la presente situación, desde una perspectivateológica católica que busca identificar lo que podría ser un signode los tiempos y una oportunidad histórica de profundizar en la renovacióniniciada desde el Concilio Ecuménico Vaticano II, para la Iglesia y la Teologíacatólicas.
