Due to this process of environmental awareness, international conferences and meetings have emerged aiming to be pioneers in policies formulation aligned with sustainable development, such as the Conference of the Parties (COP). This research aims to ponder on the role of the COP in international environmental policy, accumulated debts with the environment and the challenges in global governance to ensure that countries comply with their environmental commitments. This research demonstrates that, over the years, the agreements in the COP have had implementation problems by its members leading to an accumulation of debts with the environment and weakness in the governance capacity of the COP. El cambio climático ha sido un tema pertinente en las últimas décadas desde que los países se han concientizado del daño que sus industrias le ocasionan al medio ambiente. Gracias a este proceso de concientización ambiental han surgido puntos de encuentro internacionales que pretenden ser pioneros en la formulación de políticas alineadas al desarrollo sostenible, como la Conferencia de las Partes (COP). Este trabajo tiene como objetivo reflexionar sobre el papel de la COP en la política ambiental internacional, las deudas acumuladas con el ambiente y los retos en gobernanza global para lograr que los países cumplan con sus compromisos ambientales. A través de los años, los acuerdos en la COP han afrontado problemas para su implementación por parte de los miembros, llevando a la acumulación de deudas con el ambiente y una debilidad en la capacidad de gobernanza en el seno de la COP.
