The objective of this research is to estimate the meaning that the commemoration of the Bicentennial of the Central American Independence has for young university students. The methodology used was the application of the survey technique to young university students between 18 and 22 years old, enrolled in humanistic careers and who have taken the subject of History of El Salvador. For there to be a true historical meaning of the commemoration of the Bicentennial and to transcend rote learning, the teacher who teaches the subject of history must change and adapt his didactic style to achieve the objective of forming citizens with historical roots of identity and not a simple rote learning. El artículo parte de la tesis que cada vez que nos alejamos más de un evento histórico se corre el riesgo de comprender menos su significado y por ende su importancia si no se da una enseñanza significativa. El objetivo con el que se hace esta investigación es estimar el significado que tiene para los jóvenes universitarios la conmemoración del Bicentenario de la Independencia Centroamericana. La metodología utilizada fue la aplicación de la técnica de la encuesta a jóvenes universitarios de entre 18 a 22 años, inscritos en carreras humanísticas y que hayan cursado la asignatura de Historia de El Salvador. Para que exista un verdadero significado histórico de la conmemoración del bicentenario y trascender el aprendizaje memorístico, el docente que imparte la asignatura de historia debe cambiar y adaptar su estilo didáctico para lograr el objetivo de formar ciudadanos con raíces históricas identitarias y no un simple aprendizaje memorístico.
