We researched the perception of English as a language that generates opportunities for employment and economic growth. We surveyed 122 Costa Ricans from 15 to 66 years old. The data obtained suggest that English appears to have prestige in Costa Rica, and that it is well received by many as a foreign language that should continue to be taught in public institutions. Se analizan los resultados de una encuesta elaborada para examinar el aparente prestigio de la lengua inglesa en Costa Rica. Se investigó la percepción de un grupo acerca del inglés como lengua generadora de oportunidades laborales y económicas. Se llevó a cabo una encuesta a 122 personas costarricenses de edades entre 15 y 66 años. Los datos indican que el inglés parece contar con prestigio en Costa Rica y que es bien recibido por muchos como lengua extranjera que debe seguirse enseñando en las instituciones educativas estatales.
