However, Lezama Lima also develops his concept of the Baroque in dialogue with European Art historians. Thus, the article examines chess in the poem “Un puente, un gran Puente” [A bridge, a great bridge] (1941) as an allegory of World War II. The theoretical framework includes Neo-Baroque procedures explained by Severo Sarduy. A comienzos del siglo XX, los aportes intelectuales de Alfonso Reyes y de Pedro Henríquez Ureña fueron vitales para la apropiación cultural del Barroco en América Latina. No obstante, Lezama Lima también desarrolla su concepto del Barroco en diálogo con los historiadores del arte europeos. Así, se examina el ajedrez en el poema «Un puente, un gran puente» (1941) como una alegoría de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. El marco teórico incluye los procedimientos de la estética neobarroca explicados por Severo Sarduy.
