Born with the open society, its history is created by the aesthetic needs posed by this type of society. These needs are expressed at three levels: the image of the character, the image of the world and the image of the word. The people of open societies have a public image and an image for themselves. It often happens that these images do not coincide. Even in Modernity, the subject does not recognize himself in his own public image. The worlds of open societies are several and give rise to abbreviated images, symbols, which Bakhtin called chronotopes. Finally, the word of open societies becomes an aesthetic register of the positions of the speakers and social changes. The novel fuses these three images and becomes a cultural event of the first order, especially in the modern world. This conception of the novel is based on the ideas of Bakhtin and aims to go one step further. La novela es un género literario especial. Nace con la sociedad abierta y su historia viene dada por las necesidades estéticas que plantea ese tipo de sociedad. Esas necesidades se expresan a tres niveles: la imagen del personaje, la imagen del mundo y la imagen de la palabra. Las personas de las sociedades abiertas tienen una imagen pública y una imagen para sí mismas. Suele suceder que esas imágenes no coincidan; incluso en la Modernidad, que el sujeto no se reconozca en su propia imagen pública. Los mundos de las sociedades abiertas son varios y dan lugar a imágenes abreviadas, símbolos, que Bajtín llamó cronotopos. Por último, la palabra de las sociedades abiertas se convierte en un registro estético de las posiciones de los interlocutores y de los cambios sociales. La novela funde esas tres imágenes y se convierte en un acontecimiento cultural de primer orden, especialmente en el mundo moderno. Esta concepción de la novela se basa en las ideas de Bajtín y pretende ir un paso más allá.
