Under the auspices of the anthropological museums of Berlin, Hamburg and Munich, Lehmann, the scholar of Eduard Seler, investigated mainly archaeological, ethnographic, and historical sources. In addition, following his own areas of interest, Lehmann also collected vocabularies, phrases and short texts from 21 different indigenous groups. Based on this research, the young Berlin scientist wrote his dissertation about the Rama language (1914) and his postdoctoral thesis on the Sutiava tongue. Further linguistic data, collected during the same period of investigation, were published in the famous opus: The languages of Central America in their mutual relationships and connections to South America and Mexico in 1920. Although the edition was limited to 400 copies, the study is considered the most profound historical source of linguistic information about Central America to the present day. This article outlines the historical context, the scientific approach and the general structure of Lehmann’s opus. By describing the documentation of the Sutiava tongue, the author demonstrates the current system of documentation as well as the methodological limitations of the historical approach applied during the formation of American Studies. Entre 1907 y 1909, el lingüista alemán Walter Lehmann realizó un viaje de exploración por varios países de América Central. Encargado por los museos antropológicos de Berlín, Hamburgo y Munich, el alumno de Eduard Seler buscó principalmente fuentes arqueológicas, etnográficas e históricas. Persiguiendo adicionalmente sus propios intereses de estudio, Lehmann recuperó también vocabularios, frases y textos cortos de 21 grupos indígenas diferentes. Basándose en sus investigaciones, el joven berlinés escribió tanto su tesis doctoral sobre la lengua rama (1914), como su tesis postdoctoral sobre el idioma del pueblo Sutiava. Los demás datos lingüísticos procedentes del mismo viaje fueron publicados en la famosa obra: Las lenguas de América Central en sus relaciones entre sí y con América del Sur y México en el año 1920. Aun cuando la edición se limitó a 400 ejemplares, hasta el presente se le considera como la fuente histórica más profunda de la información lingü.stica sobre América Central, gracias a su carácter holístico y comparativo. El presente trabajo bosqueja el contexto histórico, el enfoque científico y la estructura general de la obra de Lehmann. Exponiendo la documentación del idioma de Sutiava, el autor señala tanto el presente valor documental, como las limitaciones metodológicas del enfoque histórico-cultural, aplicado durante la formación de las ciencias americanistas.
