This expedition was in charge of the doctor Francisco Xavier Balmis, who arrived in New Spain in 1804 and later set sail for the Philippines. Secondary missions were sent to Tabasco, Oaxaca, Guatemala and Chiapas. The following pages analyze the way in which the sub-expedition that arrived at the intendencia de Ciudad Real de Chiapa was organized, paying special attention to the role played by the clergy in its application, as well as the difficulties it faced. En 1803, por disposición del rey Carlos IV de España, se organizó una expedición para llevar a sus territorios en América la vacuna contra la viruela. Dicha expedición estuvo a cargo del médico Francisco Xavier Balmis, quien llegó a la Nueva España en 1804 para después zarpar con rumbo a las Filipinas. Misiones secundarias fueron enviadas a Tabasco, Oaxaca, Guatemala y Chiapas. En las páginas siguientes se analiza la forma en que se organizó la subexpedición que llegó a la intendencia de Ciudad Real de Chiapa, poniendo especial atención en el papel que jugó el clero en su aplicación, así como en las dificultades que enfrentó. Em 1803, por ordem do Rei Carlos IV da Espanha, foi organizada uma expedição para levar a vacina contra a varíola aos seus territórios na América. A expedição esteve a cargo do médico Francisco Xavier Balmis, que chegou à Nova Espanha em 1804 e posteriormente partiu para as Filipinas. Missões secundárias foram enviadas a Tabasco, Oaxaca, Guatemala e Chiapas. As páginas seguintes analisam a forma como se organizou a subexpedição que chegou à Câmara Municipal de Ciudad Real de Chiapa, prestando especial atenção ao papel que o clero desempenhou na sua implementação, bem como às dificuldades que enfrentou.
