It argues how the deficit of institutionality and the social representations of work have consequences on the creation and maturation of informal economies and the tendency to seek quick and easy enrichment in some sectors of Colombian society. To link the historical scenarios, it resorts to the path dependence approach, through which it can be stated that, based on the contexts and conditions that gave rise to easy work, the bases of an illegal «industry» were consolidated, which permanently reinvented itself and gave rise to the development of certain skills useful for survival during the colonial period, extending to the Republic, thus contributing to the tendency to make a living illegally. El artículo explora las bases de la construcción histórica del trabajo en el periodo colonial, sus representaciones sociales y la incidencia en la constitución de economías sumergidas en el periodo republicano. Se argumenta la forma en que el déficit de institucionalidad y las representaciones históricas y sociales del trabajo tienen consecuencias en la creación y maduración de economías informales y la tendencia a buscar el enriquecimiento rápido y fácil en algunos sectores de la sociedad colombiana. Para vincular los escenarios históricos, se recurre al enfoque de path dependence (trayectorias dependientes), mediante el cual se puede afirmar que, a partir de los contextos y condiciones que dieron origen al trabajo fácil, se fueron consolidando las bases de una ‘industria’ ilegal que se reinventa permanentemente y da origen al desarrollo de ciertas competencias útiles para sobrevivir en el periodo de la Colonia, se extiende hasta la República, y contribuye, así, a la tendencia a ganarse la vida de manera ilegal. O artigo explora as bases da construção histórica do trabalho no período colonial, suas representações sociais e o impacto na constituição das economias submersas no período republicano. Discute-se como o déficit institucional e as representações históricas e sociais do trabalho têm consequências na criação e no amadurecimento das economias informais e na tendência de buscar o enriquecimento rápido e fácil em alguns setores da sociedade colombiana. Para articular os cenários históricos, utiliza-se a abordagem de path dependence (trajeitorias dependentes), através da qual se pode afirmar que, a partir dos contextos e condições que deram origem ao trabalho fácil, consolidaram-se os alicerces de uma 'indústria' ilegal que se reinventa permanentemente e dá origem o desenvolvimento de certas aptidões úteis para a sobrevivência no período colonial, estendendo-se à República, contribuindo assim para a tendência de ganhar a vida na ilegalidade.
