The central argument of this paper is that the dominant groups make up their long-term power and that apart from the use of various strategies to increase material wealth, symbolic power also plays a dominant role, which can be found in the forms in which they agree their marriages, alliances, the mystification of their members, charitable practices, among others. All this allows them to accumulate prestige while trying to legitimize the accumulated power against rivals and the subaltern classes. Lastly, this research was carried out taking up sources of archives, press notes, biographies and mournful notes. El presente artículo analiza una parte de la cultura política, imaginarios y habitus de una de las familias de la élite costarricense, los Jiménez; en un periodo comprendido entre 1810 y el 2010, aproximadamente. El argumento central de esta exposición consiste en que los grupos dominantes conforman su poder a largo plazo y que, aparte del uso de diversas estrategias para acrecentar la riqueza material, también juega un papel dominante el poder simbólico, el cual se puede encontrar en las formas en que pactan sus matrimonios, alianzas, la mistificación de sus miembros, las prácticas caritativas, entre otros. Todo esto les permite acumular prestigio, a la vez que intentan legitimar el poder acumulado ante rivales y las clases subalternas. Por último, esta investigación se realizó retomando fuentes de archivos, notas hemerográficas, biografías y notas luctuosas.
