Un intento de golpe de Estado en la Costa Rica del siglo XIX Corella Ovares, Esteban Armed Forces Coup d'état Soldiers Costa Rica History fuerzas armadas golpe de Estado soldados Costa Rica historia The article analyzes the attempted coup d’état carried out by General Manuel Quirós against Juan Rafael Mora, the uprising failed because the general was not able to mobilize enough men to take the San Jose barracks, despite trying to convince the militiamen through the rumor that Mora’s government would force them to fight for Juan José Flores, former president of Ecuador who was in the country at that time. The episode serves as an excuse to examine the means used by members of the elite to mobilize the militiamen who formed most of the armed forces of Costa Rica in the mid-nineteenth century. El artículo analiza el intento de golpe de Estado realizado por el general Manuel Quirós contra Juan Rafael Mora. Este alzamiento fracasó porque el general no fue capaz de movilizar a suficientes hombres como para tomar el cuartel de San José, a pesar de que intentó convencer a los milicianos mediante el rumor de que el gobierno de Mora los obligaría a luchar por Juan José Flores, expresidente de Ecuador que se encontraba en el país en ese momento. El episodio sirve de excusa para examinar los medios utilizados por los miembros de la élite para movilizar a los milicianos que formaban la mayor parte de las fuerzas armadas de Costa Rica a mediados del siglo XIX.
