This article outlines the scholarly path of Dr. Garavaglia: those who paid for his training, his main writings and the lines of research that he left open after his death. La producción académica del doctor Juan Carlos Garavaglia fue prolífica, razón por la cual sus valiosos aportes a la historiografía latinoamericana han conformado un amplio espectro en el que destacan estudios de historia agraria y rural en distintos países de esta región, así como investigaciones sobre la construcción estatal en el continente; trabajos en los que el tema de la milicia y la guerra se devela de forma relevante y frecuente. En el presente artículo se esboza el recorrido erudito del Dr. Garavaglia: quienes abonaron a su formación, sus principales escritos y las líneas de investigación que dejó abiertas tras su fallecimiento.
