It begins by establishing the advantages and benefits associated with the technology, followed by a description of the use of commercial software on the part of national institutions and the many fields in which it is used. The importance of GIS is discussed in land-use management and how institutions are managing that information. The article goes on to discuss the advantages of using open software and how it is being implemented by these institutions. The article ends with conclusions about the status of an open GIS and various activities that have been undertaken. El presente artículo trata sobre el uso de los Sistemas de Información Geográfca (SIG) de código abierto en Costa Rica. Se inicia planteando las ventajas que conlleva el aplicar este tipo de tecnolo-gías y cuáles son los benefcios que se obtienen. Seguidamente, se realiza una descripción del uso de software comercial por parte de instituciones nacionales y los diversos campos en los que son utilizados. Se plantea la importancia de los SIGs en forma general en la gestión del territorio y el manejo que se ha dado en el manejo de la información institucional. También se mencionan las ven-tajas que se tienen al usar software libre en las instituciones y como se ha venido implementando en las mismas. Por último, se realizan una serie de conclusiones que versan sobre el estado de SIG código abierto y diversas actividades que se han realizado.
