Since then, the course “Historical Geography” has been an integral component of the training of geography professionals. This paper reviews the topics, instructors, and conceptual proposals that have shaped the training in Historical Geography, aiming to discern the academic relevance of this field and the contributions of these trends to the professionalization of students in the geographical discipline. El III Congreso Universitario vio nacer la Facultad de Ciencias Sociales de la Universidad de Costa Rica en el año 1973, y con ella la Escuela de Historia y Geografía. Desde entonces y hasta el presente, el curso “Geografía histórica” ha sido parte de la formación de los profesionales en Geografía. Se propone una revisión de los temas, docentes y propuestas conceptuales que han formado parte de la formación en Geografía histórica para entrever la vigencia de este campo en términos académicos y los aportes de estas tendencias en la profesionalización de las personas estudiantes de la disciplina geográfica. O III Congresso Universitário, realizado em 1973, marcou o nascimento da Faculdade de Ciências Sociais da Universidade da Costa Rica, juntamente com a Escola de História e Geografia. Desde então, o curso “Geografia Histórica” tem sido parte integrante da formação dos profissionais em Geografia. Este artigo propõe uma revisão dos temas, docentes e propostas conceituais que têm moldado a formação em Geografia Histórica, com o objetivo de avaliar a relevância deste campo em termos acadêmicos e as contribuições dessas tendências para a profissionalização dos estudantes da disciplina geográfica.
