El presente artículo brinda una visión integral de los SIGs, su entorno institucional y sus áreas de aplicación. Se enfatiza la necesidad de considerarlos como una herramienta que facilita el proceso de toma de decisiones a nivel institucional y no como una solución en sí misma.
