Interesa observar cómo de la aparición de máquinas que automatizan la vida cotidiana del ser humano, se da paso a las narrativas sobre autómatas y engendros entre finales del siglo XVIII y prácticamente todo el siglo XIX, relatos que establecen las pautas para las representaciones futuras. El siglo XX, conocido también como el siglo de las máquinas, inicia con todo un movimiento apologista de lo maquínico -el futurismo- que en el plano narrativo se subdividirá en dos grandes tendencias representacionales: la máquina simula la fisonomía y capacidades humanas, el ser humano tiende hacia lo maquínico.  Finalmente, el trabajo aborda el cambio de paradigma finisecular introducido por las realidades simuladas que, en el plano de la representación, va a significar la crisis de la solidez analógica del metal para dar paso a la disolución de los cuerpos por medio de la imagen. This article proposes a historical and selective approach of a series of narrative fictions that explore the fascinating and terrifying relationship that human beings have established with their mechanical constructions, as one result of the west's modernizing processes. The text points out how the invention of machines that automate daily human life is followed by narratives about automatons and other mechanical beings during the last decades of the eighteenth and practically the whole  nineteenth  century.  These  stories  will  establish  the  pattern  for  future representations of machines in fiction. The twentieth century could be considered the century of the machine, and begins with a movement that praises machines above  all,  Futurism.  On  a  narrative  level,  Futurism  has  two  main  themes:  the machine that simulates human forms and skills, and machine-like human beings. Finally, the article presents the turn-of-the-century paradigm change introduced by simulated reality and leading to a crisis of the analog strength of metal, which on a narrative level will yield to the dissolution of the body in the image.
