Higher education is not exempt from this trend as current tendencies point towards the virtualization of professional training programs. Consequently, the role of the instructor has evolved; virtual learning environments are the new settings where learning occurs, necessitating a change in how pedagogical mediation is conducted. The objective of this essay is to answer the question posed in the title by drawing on the authors’ experiences and supporting it with bibliographical evidence. Las dinámicas sociales han cambiado la manera de efectuar las tareas cotidianas, dado que ahora se requiere la tecnología para realizar la mayoría de ellas. La educación universitaria está exenta de esto y, actualmente, la tendencia es la virtualización de las ofertas de formación profesional. Por lo tanto, el rol de la persona docente es ahora distinta; los entornos virtuales de aprendizaje son el nuevo escenario donde ocurre la mediación pedagógica, lo cual demanda un cambio en la manera de ejecutar la docencia. Así pues, el objetivo de este ensayo es contestar la pregunta que titula el texto, mediante la argumentación de los autores, con base en sus experiencias y los fundamentos bibliográficos.
