In addition, some measures taken by two state universities from Costa Rica to deal with this anomalous situation are discussed. Although the studies consulted agree that virtuality loses the essence of a laboratory course, as there is no possibility of handling equipment and instrumentation, it is considered that the use of virtual and technological tools is a good complement to support the learning of students and that their inclusion is important for the development of education in the chemistry laboratory. Este ensayo aborda la problemática enfrentada por docentes que imparten laboratorios de química ante la pandemia por COVID-19; las medidas de contingencia ejecutadas para continuar con los cursos de laboratorio en virtualidad, como lo fueron los simuladores químicos en línea y la aplicación de prácticas caseras de laboratorio; las recomendaciones realizadas por equipos expertos, así como algunas impresiones del estudiantado ante las medidas implementadas por el profesorado. Además, se discuten algunas modificaciones realizadas por dos de las universidades estatales de Costa Rica para hacer frente a esta situación fuera de lo común. Si bien los estudios consultados coinciden en que ante la virtualidad se pierde la esencia de un curso de laboratorio, al no tenerse la posibilidad del manejo de equipos e instrumentación, se considera que la utilización de herramientas virtuales y tecnológicas es un buen complemento para el apoyo del aprendizaje de discentes y que su inclusión es importante para el desarrollo, en el estudiantado, de diferentes capacidades vinculadas con el aprendizaje de la química.
