Aspeé, Juan González, José Educación superior beneficios estudiantiles rendimiento académico Higher education student benefits academic performance This study analyzed the effects of providing welfare benefits (such as subsidy, housing, and food), granted by the Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María and by governmental organisms in Chili, on the academic performance of the students at the same institution. To reach such purpose, we implemented a quantitative investigation to examine institutional databases where 3,204 students, with or without welfare benefits, were registered. The analysis was carried out in an incremental way, from the descriptive aspects to the explanatory methods of the academic performance (understood as the average grading in a specific semester), based on the possession or not of the welfare benefits. The investigation concludes that the students with welfare benefits present an academic performance similar to the students without them, and although this conclusion explains part of the academic performance, the magnitude is unsubstantial (in the time and space analyzed). These results compel to adjust the institutional discourses that justify the existence of these benefits and compel them to investigate their relationship with other factors of importance (beyond the academic performance). Este estudio analizó los efectos de la entrega de beneficios asistenciales (de mantención, de residencia y de alimentación), dispuestos por la Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María y por organismos gubernamentales de Chile, en el rendimiento académico de estudiantes de la misma institución. Para cumplir con dicho propósito, se recurrió a una investigación de tipo cuantitativa, que examinó bases de datos institucionales, donde se incorporaron 3.204 estudiantes con beneficios asistenciales y sin estos. El análisis se realizó de manera incremental, desde lo descriptivo, hasta llegar a modelos explicativos del rendimiento académico (entendido como la media de calificaciones en un semestre específico), con base en el goce o no de beneficios asistenciales. La investigación concluye que estudiantes con beneficios asistenciales presentan un rendimiento académico similar que estudiantes sin estos beneficios, y aunque esto explican parte del rendimiento académico, su magnitud es insustancial (en el tiempo y espacio analizado). Estos resultados obligan a ajustar los discursos institucionales que justifican la existencia de estos beneficios y obligan a investigar su relación con otros factores de importancia (más allá del rendimiento académico).
