Among its main contributions, the importance of knowing and teaching processes applied strictly for adults by university coordinators of programs and projects stands out. The relevance of applying this kind of knowledge will allow efficient use of institutional financial resources, particularly for the real commitment of the rural adult community towards the implementation of field activities and accomplishing, in a shorter term, the expected academic achievement. A successful project experience is described in which some andragogical strategies were applied through extension, and which produced a better participation and engagement from rural people with the projects developed by the University. Consequently, applicability of these concepts in the programs and projects of rural development promoted through universities must lay the foundation for regional rural development strategies with the ultimate goal of finding ways to improve the quality of life of people in particular scenarios. El objetivo de este trabajo fue describir la evolución e importancia de los procesos andragógicos en la búsqueda de perfiles rurales comprometidos con el quehacer académico universitario en el desarrollo y ejecución de programas y proyectos. Dentro de los principales aportes se destaca la importancia de conocer y aplicar procesos de enseñanza, estrictamente para la población adulta, por parte de las coordinaciones de programas y proyectos universitarios. La trascendencia de tomar en cuenta este tipo de conocimientos permitirá hacer un uso eficiente de los recursos económicos institucionales; esto, debido principalmente al compromiso real de la comunidad adulta rural para la ejecución de las actividades de campo. Asimismo, obtener en menor plazo los logros académicos esperados. Se expone una experiencia exitosa de proyecto que aplicó metodologías andragógicas a través de la extensión, donde se mejoró la participación y compromiso de las personas en las comunidades rurales con los proyectos de la Universidad Nacional. En consecuencia, la aplicabilidad de estos conceptos en los programas y proyectos de desarrollo rural impulsados por las universidades públicas deberán sentar la base para desarrollar estrategias rurales regionales, cuyo fin ulterior es buscar la manera de mejorar la calidad de vida de las personas en escenarios particulares.
