Reading expertise is understood as the use of two necessary procedures to decode words: the lexical route for the acknowledgment of known words, and the sub-lexical route for unknown words. An experimental pre-post design study was carried out with a control group, using the letter recognition test of the LEE Test at the beginning of the 2010 school year; and, at the end of the 2011 school year, the phonetic segmentation, word and pseudo-word reading tests were implemented. The significant differences between both methods point towards Pictophonic Strategies as a proposal that develops experienced reading. Este artículo muestra los resultados de un estudio hecho en Costa Rica en el año 2011, con el objetivo de comprobar la adquisición de la lectura experta en estudiantes de segundo grado que recibieron instrucción durante dos años en el aprendizaje de la lectura con las estrategias pictofónicas, en comparación con estudiantes que utilizaron, durante el mismo período, el método ecléctico. Se entiende por experticia lectora el uso de los dos procedimientos necesarios para la decodificación de palabras: la ruta léxica en el reconocimiento de palabras conocidas, y la ruta subléxica en palabras desconocidas. Se realizó un estudio experimental de diseño pre-post con grupo control, con la prueba de reconocimiento de letras del test LEE al inicio del curso lectivo del 2010, y las pruebas de segmentación fonética, lectura de palabras y de pseudopalabras del mismo test, al finalizar el curso lectivo del 2011.
