The article presents a descriptive-comparative analysis of how rational numbers are taught in four mathematics programs developed in Chile from 1974 to 2012, encompassing from third to sixth grade (ages 8-12). Methods. The learning objectives were analyzed based on the notion of fractions, decimals, and percentages, following the standards set by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM, 2003). Content analysis was used as the method. Results. Most of the notions and understanding the rational number are recurrent aspects across the programs. However, they vary in their flexible use, representations, calculation and solving problems processes. Discussion. The observed evolution in the topic is found to be related to social changes and educational policies during the time period. Objetivo. El artículo presenta un análisis curricular del tratamiento de los números racionales en los cuatro programas de estudio de matemática que han estado vigentes en Chile desde 1974 al 2012. Metodología. Específicamente, se caracterizaron los objetivos de enseñanza-aprendizaje vinculados a las nociones de fracción, decimal y porcentaje, atendiendo a las categorías del National Council of Teacher of Mathematics (NCTM, 2003). Resultados. Se encontró que la mayoría de las nociones relativas al número racional y su comprensión son aspectos recurrentes; sin embargo, difieren en su uso flexible, en sus representaciones, en el cálculo y resolución de problemas. Discusión. Concluimos que la evolución observada en el tópico es relativa a los cambios sociales y de las políticas educativas del momento. Objetivo. O artigo apresenta uma análise curricular do tratamento dos números racionais nos quatro programas de estudos de matemática que vigoraram no Chile de 1974 a 2012. Metodologia. Especificamente, os objetivos de ensino-aprendizagem vinculados às noções de fração, decimal e porcentagem foram caracterizados de acordo com as categorias do Conselho Nacional de Professores de Matemática (NCTM, 2003). Resultados. Se encontrou que a maioria das noções relacionadas ao número racional e sua compreensão são aspectos recorrentes, porém, diferem em sua utilização flexível, em suas representações, no cálculo e resolução de problemas. Discussão. Concluímos que a evolução observada no tópico está relacionada às mudanças sociais e às políticas educacionais do momento.
