This article presents a reflection on the right to cultural identity, a concept that currently generates considerations beyond the territorial and temporal while emphasizing specific characteristics of differentiation. It discusses the concepts of cultural identity as a right of US Hispanic students and the close relationship of the heritage language to cultural identity. In addition, the article presents the concepts of reconstruction of dignity as well as the concept of belonging related to cultural identity provided directly from the voices of US Hispanic high school students. In this process, strengthening the heritage language plays an indispensable role. En este artículo se presenta una reflexión acerca del derecho a la identidad cultural; un concepto que en la actualidad genera consideraciones más allá de los contextos territoriales y temporales a la vez que enfatiza caracterizaciones particulares de diferenciación. Se discute el concepto de identidad cultural como derecho de los estudiantes hispanounidenses y la estrecha relación de la lengua de herencia con esta. Además, el artículo presenta los conceptos de reconstrucción de la dignidad y la pertenencia referentes a la identidad cultural, provenientes directamente de las voces de estudiantes hispanounidenses de la escuela secundaria. Por tanto, se concluye que en este proceso, el fortalecimiento de la lengua de herencia posee un rol indispensable.
