En junio de 1999 se aprobó el Decreto Ejecutivo N.° 27913-S que permitía la esterilización de mujeres y hombres mayores de edad para cortar de manera voluntaria con su ciclo reproductivo. A partir de este momento, las mujeres han hecho uso de este nuevo derecho. Este artículo muestra lo importante que ha sido en la vida de un grupo mujeres residentes en las comunidades de Morales, Costa de Pájaros y Manzanillo de Chomes, provincia de Puntarenas, Costa Rica, la aprobación de este Decreto. El articulo está estructurado en cinco partes, en la primera se plantean algunos ejes teóricos que orientaron el trabajo, de seguido se presentan las características sociales y demográficas mas importantes de las participantes, en la tercera se describen los motivos que incidieron en la decisión de la esterilización, en la cuarta alguna información sobre el Decreto, que ayuda a contextualizar las condiciones de vida de las mujeres; y, finalmente, algunas conclusiones.AbstractIn June 1999, the approval of Executive Order N° 27913-S in Costa Rica allows sterilization for bothadult male and female to voluntarily interrupt their reproductive cycle. From this point forward, womenin this country started to claim this new right. This article highlights how important the approval of thisdecree for a group of 40 women in the communities of Morales, Costa de Pájaros and Manzanillode Chomes located in the province of Puntarenas has been. Data used for this article is based on aninvestigation conducted by the Institute of Women Studies of the National University of Costa Rica,which concluded in 2008. The article consists of sections: the first part addresses some theoretical axesthat guided this study, followed by social and demographic characteristics of its participants.
