A comparative investigation is proposed, in which the similarities, differences and high and low indices regarding the participation of women in local powers in each of the countries of Central America are reflected. The topics to be compared are the historical evolution of women’s social and political participation, starting at the point where they play an important role in making changes in favor of their partici-pation rights; attaining from these fights the recognition of the feminine suffrage, spending later, to the historical moment in that they began to exert public charges. Likewise, the current incidence and performance in several institutions of their respective political and regional systems will be described, to reflect on the scope they have managed to establish as part of society. The legal reforms implemented to guarantee these changes in the electoral sys-tem are explained. In addition, data are presented with a temporary delimitation from 1994 to 2018, for positions of local power - which are presented to compara-tively assess the level of participation of women before and after the Political Parties Law entered into force, and how that has impacted on the level of participation of women in politics, particularly the case of El Salvador. El artículo describe de manera breve y precisa los antecedentes del voto para la mujer en la región centroamericana, cómo fue que se obtuvo el reconocimiento de ese derecho fundamental, cuáles fueron las causas históricas que llevaron a su obtención, las primeras mujeres en participar activamente en la política de cada uno de sus países y los cuerpos normativos en donde se establecieron las distintas modalidades del voto para la mujer. Se plantea una investigación de carácter comparado, en la cual se reflejen las similitudes, diferencias e índices altos y bajos en cuanto a la participación de las mujeres en poderes locales en cada uno de los países de Centroamérica. Los tópicos a comparar son la evolución histórica de la participación social y política de las mujeres, empezando en el punto en que ellas juegan un papel importante para realizar cambios a favor de sus derechos de participación; logrando a partir de esas luchas el reconocimiento del sufragio femenino, pasando posteriormente, al momento histórico en que empezaron a ejercer cargos públicos. Asimismo, se describirá la incidencia y desempeño actual en las diversas instituciones de sus sistemas políticos y regionales respectivos, para reflexionar sobre los alcances que han logrado establecer como parte de la sociedad. Se explican las reformas jurídicas implementadas para garantizar esos cambios en el sistema electoral. Además, se presentan datos con una delimitación temporal – de 1994 a 2018, para cargos de poder local – los cuales se presentan para apreciar comparativamente el nivel de participación de la mujer antes y después de que entrara en vigencia la Ley de Partidos Políticos, y cómo eso ha impactado en el nivel de participación de las mujeres en la política, para el caso particular de El Salvador.
